O / L
O / L is a full length album and multi media project I've been working on for six years. The project originated in and is a continuation of writings and recordings I began in 2011 for an Alpha Couple album that was never finished, and it has since grown to include music, installation, performance, and printed material.
Based on an American woman's Youtube channel, O / L tells the story of L and her dog O as they gradually break free from L's situation in an abusive relationship. All songs, writings, and visual materials within O / L are made up of materials uploaded by L, including footage, audio, blogs, comments, and photographs.
To build this album I've sourced over twenty-four hours worth of audio samples, for which a large spreadsheet serves as a key. Artist Leslie Supnet illustrated O / L's album cover using fave major visual motifs in the story, representing themes which also appear in song lyrics, samples, and in video installations.
You can read more about O / L here and here, and browse the tag on my blog here. The album itself is still a work in progress.
O / L will be a part of Kazoo Fest x CHANNEL in Guelph in 2017. In January 2016 I presented the live multimedia debut installation of O / L at Katzman Contemporary in Toronto as part of CHANNEL. In 2013 the spreadsheet key to O / L was displayed in Berlin.
O / L is a pop concretè album made up of structure songs and field recordings. All electronics (samples, etc) on O / L are taken from L's Youtube channel. Currently, acoustic instruments are limited to voice, harmonica, and guitar.
